Alternative High School Equivalency Preparation (AHSEP) Program

OUR MISSION

The Greater Amsterdam School District believes that students of all ages can and should learn. We believe that the purpose of our schools is the education of the whole child. To that end, we recognize and promote the opportunities for increased learning that come from:

The Alternative High School Equivalency Preparation (AHSEP) program at Amsterdam High School is designed to provide a means to obtain the New York State High School Equivalency Diploma, as well as to provide students with the tools and skills needed to obtain employment and/or continuing education.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Who is eligible?

A: The New York State Education Department sets strict criteria for eligibility for AHSEP programs. Many factors are considered, including age and current academic standing. A formal review process takes place at the high school to determine whether a candidate is eligible to enroll.

Q: What will I be doing?

A: You will spend part of each day in the AHSEP classroom preparing to take the GED tests. The curriculum focuses on instruction and strategies to pass all of the GED tests (Math, Science, Social Studies, Language Arts Reading, and Language Arts Writing). You will also have opportunities to prepare to enter the workforce through vocational preparation activities, including job training at local businesses, and to discuss continuing education
 

Q: How much does it cost?

A: Nothing. It is free to eligible district resident
 

Q: How will I get there?

A: You may take the school bus to and from school or provide your own transportation. The school district will provide transportation to and from job training sites.
 

Q: What will I get out of it?

A: You will have fun learning while earning your high school equivalency diploma and preparing to enter the workforce and/or furthering your education.
 

Q: Do I need to attend everyday?

A: Yes. You must maintain satisfactory attendance to remain in the program.
 

Q: How long do I have to stay in the program?

A: You will receive your New York State High School Equivalency Diploma when you have passed the GED tests and have met all New York State Education Department requirements.
 

Q: When can I take the GED tests?

A: You can take the GED tests as soon as you have met all requirements for test administration set forth by the New York State Education Department.
 

Q: How much does it cost to take the GED tests?

A: Currently there is no fee to take the GED tests.
 

Q: Is lunch available?

A: Yes, lunch is available at the school cafeteria (reduced fees may apply), or you may bring your own lunch.
 

Q: Can I walk across the stage to receive my New York State High School Equivalency Diploma?

A: Yes, if you would like to participate, you will be able to cross the stage during an Amsterdam High School graduation ceremony.
