Math

The math program in 1st Grade builds upon the skills and concepts taught in kindergarten.  Some of the topics covered include:

  • counting numbers (by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s)

  • ordering numbersBear Writing on Chalkboard

  • place value

  • adding numbers

  • subtracting numbers                                         

  • telling time

  • counting money

  • place value

  • fractions

  • geometry

  • problem solving

Students are exposed to different strategies for adding and subtracting including: using a number line, adding on and back, using manipulatives, using a 10-frame, and using doubles.  These strategies are important in teaching the concepts.  However, the students will need to work at memorizing the addition and subtraction facts.
