Marie Curie Elementary

Bear Writing on Chalkboard

Reading

Students in Kindergarten through Grade 3 at Marie Curie Elementary school are part of a federally funded grant initiative known as Reading First.  Students involved in this grant receive a minimum of 90 minutes of reading each day with an emphasis on the five major components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, comprehension, and fluency.  Direct, explicit instruction in these areas is delivered by the classroom teacher every day. You can help you child to be successful in reading by:

  • reading to your child

  • encouraging your child to read

  • talking to your child

  • monitoring homework

  • monitoring TV viewing and video games

  • taking trips to the public library

  • encouraging your child to be an active learner

The beginning of 1st Grade focuses on a review of letters, letter sounds, and sight words.  This is a brief review of the material covered in Kindergarten.  As the year progresses, students will spend time on segmenting phonemes and blending sounds.  Fluency follows as student practice reading their reading textbooks, phonics readers, and decodable readers.
