Physical Appraisals

Annual physical examinations for students include a check of hearing, vision, and changes in height and weight. Students are notified of the times when they are to report for these examinations by a note from the nurse which is to be distributed by the homeroom teacher. The Homeroom Teacher Must Distribute This Notification As Soon As It Is Received From The Nurse And Must Remind Students Of The Importance Of Meeting The Appointment For The Time It Is Scheduled. Physical disabilities are recorded on health records. This information is available for teachers on cumulative health record cards. A confidential list of handicapped students is issued in the fall so that all teachers will understand the problems some children have. Students who have physical disabilities, which impair school efficiency, should be reported to the school nurse. The nurse can be of assistance to teachers in working with handicapped students.

Immunization

New York State law requires that all students must be minimally immunized prior to entering school. Among other, each child's immunization record should show that he or she has had: 3 polio, 3 diphtheria, l measles, l rubella, and l mumps vaccination. Any questions please check with the school nurse.

Student Illness

Students who become ill on the way to school should report to the nurse immediately after their arrival. Students who become ill during school should obtain a pass from their classroom teacher, study hall, or media center supervisor, and report to the nurse's office. The nurse will decide whether the student should remain in school or be excused to go home. If he/she is to go home, the nurse will make the necessary arrangements, and the attendance office will be notified. In emergency situations, the school nurse will notify the high school office, which in turn notifies the teachers. Students who are ill in school may not leave the building without the nurse's authorization or Principal's. When authorization is given, report to the attendance office.

Dress Code

The New York State Department of Education ruling is that students may not wear clothing which adversely affects the learning process or which is detrimental to the health and safety of others; or which contains language which is offensive to others. Your personal appearance may often determine your employability. Consequently, the school has a responsibility to guide you so that you will become employable. Therefore, good taste, safety and health will determine our policy on school dress. A student may not wear headgear (e.g. hat, bandanna, scarf) in the building during the school day. All headgear must be placed in your locker upon entering school and may be retrieved only at the end of the school day. They may not be carried around school and/or placed in a bookbag. Violators will have their headgear confiscated and it will not be returned until the last day of school prior to exam week. Refer to the Building Code of Conduct concerning appropriate dress for school.

School Psychologist And Social Worker

The services of the school psychologist and social worker are a part of the high school counseling program and are available to students. The school psychologist and social worker are often asked to provide assistance to individual students or their counselors, teachers, or parents to aid in making decisions in personal, social, or educational matters. Students may arrange to see the school psychologist and social worker through their counselor.

Counseling Office

The Counseling Department at the high school consists of four counselors:

Mary DeTraglia 843-5464 Christine Pietro 843-5922

Serena Mee 843-5966 James Raymond 843-5438

The counselors’ functions are to help the student assess his/her own personal qualities and capabilities, to make him/her aware of the variety of choices available to him/her, and of the steps he/she must take to achieve the goals he/she seeks. By talking with individual students, by studying information recorded about them in the past, and by talking with members of the high school staff and with parents, the counselor strives to know his/her students. The counselor has contacts with the School Psychologist, the Mental Health Clinic, Social Services, and with other agencies which provide services for students who require assistance with the solution of their personal problems.
