Withdrawal

In case of withdrawal from the Amsterdam High School, a student must secure a withdrawal form from Attendance Office and return it there when all information has been filled in. He/She must also have the complete approval of his/her parents, guidance counselor, and the principal. A student who is leaving school must return all textbooks to his/her classroom teachers before being released from the class.

Withdrawal Policy: Only under most unusual circumstances and then only with the specific permission of the Principal may a student drop a course after October lst. The student’s transcript must reflect this action in the following manner:

A. Course Title B. Grade - WP or WF (Date) C. WF (after Feb. 20 for ˝ yr. courses offered in 2nd semester)

Grading/Honor Roll

The following grading system at Amsterdam High School is effective with the 1999-00 school year: A numerical grading system will be utilized at AHS:
A passing grade in any subject is 65 or above.

  • A grade of 95 or above is considered Superior.

  • A grade of 85 - 94.9 is considered Above Average.

  • A grade of 75 - 84.9 is considered Average.

  • A grade of 65 - 74.9 is considered Below Average.

  • I = the student's work is incomplete.

  • WM = Withdrawn for medical reasons.

  • WP = Passing at the time of withdrawal.

  • WF = Failing at the time of withdrawal.

  • P = Passed (P/F) Grading.

Honor Roll standard to be as follows:

  • High Honors 95 and up

  • Honors 90 - 94.9

  • Merit 85 - 89.9

Grading

In the case of half-year courses, any grade under a 50 in the first quarter of a first semester course or the third quarter of a second semester course will be averaged as a 50 In the second quarter and on the final exam of a first semester course or in the fourth quarter and on the final exam of a second semester course, actual numerical scores will be shown and averaged as they are.

For full year courses, all grades below a 50 will be recorded on the report card as a 50. A notice to parents on the report card will read, A grade of 50 is given in place of the student's actual earned grade. Please contact your child's instructor for his/her actual grade. Any grade under a 50 will be averaged as a 50. In the 4th quarter and on the final exam, actual numerical scores will be shown and averaged as they are. Passing a Regent examination may be a State requirement for graduation. Departmental exams are required for all courses. The physical education department will use numerical grades but may use WM (withdrew medically) whenever appropriate.

Requirements for Participating in Graduation

Student must be actual June graduates or be eligible to meet graduation requirements through participation in Summer School in order to attend the June graduation ceremony.

Teacher Comment Code

The Report Card not only informs parents of academic achievement, but also contains comments from teachers. Details regarding these matters will be explained in the report card. Report cards are mailed home at the end of each 10-week marking period.

Incomplete

An incomplete grade must be changed to a number grade before the next report card is issued.

Final Examination

Our School Policy Regarding Final Examinations Is As Follows:
"In compliance with regular school procedure, students are reminded that they are required to complete the work of the course to be eligible to take the final examination (either school or Regents) for the course. Students who do not complete a course, will not receive credit for that course." If a student has not completed the work required of him/her during the fourth quarter, he/she will not be permitted to take the final examination.

A student who has not completed his/her work because he/she was legally absent from school, should be given a fair opportunity to complete the work he/she missed and to make up the final examination.

For the student who has not completed his/her work and who was absent illegally, or who was in attendance and simply did not do what was required of him/her, the fourth quarter should be given the actual grade earned. The final exam grade, if not taken, should be a “0” A student who is illegally absent from the exam, will not be granted the opportunity to make it up. A student desiring or needing a credit in a course may either attend summer school (if he/she meets the eligibility requirements set by the Board of Education) or repeat the subject during the next academic school year. No student will be given a final exam unless his or her textbook is returned or payment for lost books is made.
