AHS Media Center

Media Center Policies

The Media Center in the Amsterdam High School is a hub for technology use, information access and the encouragement of leisure reading. The center provides areas for collaboration as well as areas for quiet study and reading. The Media Center staff supports minimal discussion and conversation among students and teachers while remaining committed to providing an atmosphere conducive to quiet reflection and individual study. Patrons are expected to cooperate with the staff in maintaining a healthy balance between these two aspects of intellectual activity in the Media Center.

Amsterdam High School  Media Center respects and enforces all policies of the Greater Amsterdam School District.  Media Center users should carefully read, sign, return and abide by the District's Technology Acceptable Use Policy. Policy available from your English teacher or from the Media Center.

SCHOOL LIBRARY BILL OF RIGHTS

For School Library Media Center Programs

Approved by the American Association of School Librarians Board of Directors, Atlantic City, 1969

  • The American Association of School Librarians reaffirms its belief in the Library Bill of Rights of the American Library Association. Media personnel are concerned with generating understanding of American freedoms through the development of informed and responsible citizens. To this end the American Association of School Librarians asserts that the responsibility of the school library media center is:

  • To provide a comprehensive collection of instructional materials selected in compliance with basic written selection principles, and to provide maximum accessibility to these materials.
  • To provide materials that will support the curriculum, taking into consecration the individual's needs, and the varied interests, abilities, soci-economic backgrounds, and maturity levels of the students served.
  • To provide materials for teachers and students that will encourage growth in knowledge, and that will develop literary, cultural and aesthetic appreciation, and ethical standards.
  • To provide materials which reflect the ideas and beliefs of religious, social, political, historical, and ethnic groups and their contribution to the American and world heritage and culture, thereby enabling students to develop an intellectual integrity in forming judgments.
  • To provide a written statement of the procedures for meeting the challenge of censorship of materials in school library media centers.
  • To provide qualified professional personnel to serve teachers and students.

Due to the increase in the number of students using the Media Center and to maintain proper student use of the AHS Media Center – for study, research, reading and browsing of library materials – the following regulations are in effect:

  • Quiet student conferencing for collaborative and group work is permitted in the library. However, with large numbers of students using the library, the noise level can quickly rise to unacceptable levels. Please be considerate of your fellow students, since everyone deserves a reasonably quiet atmosphere in which to do their work. Loud, disruptive conversation is not permitted.

  • Computers are for the use of individual students. In the instance where a student might need to conference with a fellow student regarding an assignment using the same computer, a request should be made to the adult at the Circulation Desk.

  •
  • Library computers must be used solely for educational purposes consistent with the Amsterdam School District Technology Acceptable Use Policy. The playing of games, checking of email, and the viewing of non-educational materials on the Internet are not allowed.

  •
  • No food or beverages are permitted in the library.

  • To come into the media center during your lunch period, an orange pass should be picked up in the media center. The orange pass is a ticket for one lunch period in the media center.
