Italian culture comes to life

Many of Amsterdam's residents originally emigrated from Italy. Our fourth grade classes had a chance to experience some of our community's heritage as Mrs. Dolores Scalise and her friend shared an old Italian traditional folktale called "The Legend of Old Befana." Using a puppet, music and dance, Old Befana sprang to life in the classroom.

Each child was also received a packet that included information about the folktale using English and Italian words. There were also pictures and other items that the children could use for the upcoming holiday season. This special program tied in nicely with the fourth grade's study of Italy and helped to enhance the children's knowledge and understanding of the culture and customs of Italy.
