McNulty
first-graders learn about butterflies and moths
McNulty Academy first-graders recently learned about
butterflies and moths.
The lesson,
"Beautiful Insects - Butterflies and Moths," was presented
by
instructors from the Scotia-Glenville Children's Museum, and
it tied in nicely with
the first grade's recent lessons about butterflies from
Mexico.
Students learned that butterflies
and moths are insects and have four stages of
life: egg, larva, pupa and adult. During a discussion about
these insects, each
student was given a butterfly and moth in a special case so
they would have a
better understanding of what the instructors were talking
about. After the
discussion, students watched a video on the life cycle,
colored their own life cycle
displays and got a chance to view different butterflies and
moths under a
microscope.
This wonderful program
reinforced students' knowledge of butterflies and their life
cycles. It also helped them learn more about the butterflies
that come from Mexico.
