Marie Curie's fourth-graders recently
took part in an "Iroquois
Arts Immersion" program at the school.
This program
was presented by Colette Lemmon and her Native American
friends and tied in with New York State history lessons,
which are part of the fourth-grade curriculum.
During the program, students were involved with
several activities that touched upon the school's magnet
theme, including storytelling, making pottery, playing lacrosse
and studying Iroquois artifacts and culture.
Students
made their own pottery bowls, tried their hand at
lacrosse, learned a Native American dance, ground corn and
listened to how the Iroquois communicated through stories. Each activity was well presented and the students thoroughly
enjoyed each one.
This was an
exceptional program that connected the magnet theme with New
York State history. Students learned
even more about the magnet theme through the lens of the
Iroquois program. We look forward to more programs like this
in the near future.
