Five students and three teachers from
Amsterdam High School are in the running for the Amsterdam
YMCA’s Outstanding Student and Outstanding Teacher of the
Year awards.
The awards recognize students
who do well academically and teachers who are dedicated to
their jobs. However, the awards emphasize involvement in
community activities, such as sports, music or other clubs
at the high school, and religious activities and other
volunteer work in the community.
This is
the fourth year the YMCA has given out the awards to
students and teachers in four area high schools: Amsterdam,
Broadalbin-Perth, Fonda-Fultonville, Galway. One student and
one teacher are chosen from all of the nominees to be the
Outstanding Student or Outstanding Teacher of the Year. The
winners will receive a plaque commemorating the occasion.
The nominees will be honored during a breakfast on
Wednesday, March 19, at America’s Best Value Inn in
Amsterdam. This year’s Master of Ceremonies is Victor
Guilianelli, President and CEO of St. Mary’s Hospital.
Others scheduled to attend are State Assemblyman George
Amedore and City of Amsterdam Mayor Ann M. Thane.
