Three dozen sophomores inducted into National Honor Society

Amsterdam High School's National Honor Society recently inducted 36 new members, recognized 33 more who will graduate later this year and named the class of 2008's valedictorian and salutatorian.

All of that took place during the society’s annual awards ceremony, held May 15 at the high school’s Bert DeRose Auditorium. The ceremony was dedicated to high school physics teacher John Battisti for his commitment to students and education.

To qualify for the National Honor Society at Amsterdam High School, students must maintain a 90 percent or better cumulative average in academic subjects (not including physical education, art, music and other courses). Students cannot qualify for the NHS until the end of the second quarter of their sophomore year. If a student does not qualify at that point, they must wait until the end of the second quarter of their junior year. Freshmen are not eligible for induction because they have not taken enough classes, and seniors are not eligible for induction because there is not enough time left in their high school career to satisfy the community service portion of the program.
