School raises money for books
Barkley Elementary School students recently raised $246.06 to
help buy books for the school.
The fundraiser was called One for Books, and students from
each of Barkley's classes brought in loose change - quarters,
nickels, dimes and pennies - to help put more books in
students' hands.
Barkley's third-graders raised the most
money, $58.16, and were rewarded with a pizza
party.
The fundraiser, called One for Books, was
done in conjunction with Scholastic Book Fairs, which arranges
book fairs around the country. Scholastic annually donates up
to one million books to three non-profit programs devoted to
improving reading skills among children: Kids in Distressed
Situations, National Center for Family Literacy, and Toys for
Tots.
Lori Welsher, the book fair chairperson,
thanked the Barkley community for its support.
"Your simple act of kindness brings more
knowledge, more adventure, more humor, more mystery, and more
imagination into the lives of young people.
Books enrich children's lives - and we all reap the benefits.
Thank you for your support of One for Books," she said.
