Happy birthday, Marie Curie!

The Greater Amsterdam School District community will gather at the Marie Curie Institute of Engineering & Communications at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, to celebrate Madame Marie Curie's birthday.

Madame Curie was a research scientist who was awarded two Nobel Prizes in the early 20th century, one for physics and one for chemistry. Her research led to the discovery of radium, and her further research led to a process that refined the element, which is used to treat cancer and other diseases.

Madame Curie was born in Warsaw, Poland, on Nov. 7, 1867, 140 years ago. She died in 1934.

Tonight's guest speaker will be Josephine Wierzbowska, a member of the Polonaise society, and the event will include performances by students, who will highlight Madame Curie's lifetime of achievements.

The Marie Curie Institute is the school district's second magnet school and is located at 9 Brice Street, Amsterdam.
