Voluntary Drug Testing of Students
The Greater Amsterdam School district believes that providing a
safe and healthy environment in which to learn is one of the
basic functions of an educational system. An essential way to
promote healthy and safe learning activities is to make
programs available, both educational and social, which are
grounded in the prevention of student use and/or abuse of
alcohol and other drugs. It is our belief that education is
the most effective preventative measure in the fight against
drugs.
The Greater Amsterdam School District will make materials available to parents which provide
information regarding student use of illegal drugs. It is
further believed that parents need to have access to
information about community agencies that provide counseling
services along with those agencies that deal with the
rehabilitation of students using illegal drugs.
The purpose of this policy is to strengthen the
District's ability to protect the health, welfare and safety
of all its students in the fight against illegal drugs and to
encourage participation in rehabilitation programs for those
students already engaged in using illegal drugs.
This policy will promote the health, welfare and safety of
students providing for voluntary drug testing. All students in
grades 6-12, with written consent by both parent and student,
shall be tested for illegal drugs.
The Board of Education shall approve any regulations
implementing this policy or any changes thereto by resolution.
