What your child will learn in Fifth Grade

Subjects Taught

Language Arts/Writing

The students will be able to:

  • Use process writing to write in a variety of genres

  • Continue the correct usage of grammar skills, punctuation and spelling

  • Organize information into paragraphs to develop essays and reports in all content areas

  • Write to: compare and contrast for literary response and expression, to gather information from listening and reading to persuade, for creative expression

Reading

The student will be able to:

  • Use word attack skills to develop a reading and writing vocabulary

  • Use comprehension strategies to draw meaning from the written work in all content areas

  • Utilize a variety of reference tools i.e. dictionaries, thesaurus, atlas read and recognize different genres i.e. realistic fiction, historical fiction, poetry, biographies, and news articles

Computer/ Technology

The student will be able to:

  • Publish a variety of written genres using word processing such as Claris Works

  • Make use of graphic programs, such as Kid Pix and Super Print

  • Research topics in content areas using programs such as Grolier's

  • Reinforce basic skills using a variety of interactive programs

Math

Upon entering 5th grade, mastery of addition, subtraction, multiplication and divisin facts are essential for success

The student will be able to:

  • Identify place values of whole numbers through billions and decimals through thousands add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers and decimals

  • Read, interpret, and create graphs and tables

  • Do customary and metric measurement

  • Add, subtract fractions and mixed numbers

  • Comprehend geometry

  • Work with ration and percents

  • Predict basic probability

  • Work with perimeter, area, and volume

  • Develop strategies for solving word problems

The students will be able to:

  • Understand map and globe skills

  • Identify geographic regions of North America

  • Describe and discuss the elements of U.S. Government

Parent Support Tips

The following parent support tips will help your child have a successful fifth grade experience:

  • Encourage responsibility and organization

  • Encourage the use of an assignment notebook and check it daily

  • Set up a quiet study area

  • Help your child prepare for tests

  • Drill math facts regularly (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)

  • Create a healthy balance between home and school (NY State recommends 10 minutes of homework per grade level, 50 minutes daily for 5th grade

  • Encourage daily independent reading - Read ! Read ! Read !

  • (your 5th grader is not too old to be read to!)

  • Set a reasonable bedtime

  • A partnership between home and school is essential to prepare your child for a successful transition to middle school
