Celebrating reading at Amsterdam's Tecler Elementary

The doors of Tecler Elementary swung busily throughout the morning on Tuesday, Nov. 9 as Celebrity Readers joined regular staff to celebrate National Young Readers Day.

Celebrity Readers including Assemblyman Paul Tonko, school administrators, former school employees and students, family members and Channel 9 newscaster Danielle Straus spent a half-hour reading age-appropriate books to individual classrooms. More than entertainment, the program delivered a strong message as it reinforced the importance of reading and showed, by example, that reading continues throughout a persons life.

National Young Readers Day is another component of district’s efforts to heighten our students’ love of reading,” said guest reader and GASD Director of Elementary Instruction Susanne Dorr. “In combination with other programs such as Reading First and Partnership for Literacy and our current curriculum we are working to further improve our children’s ability to read and to write.”

National Young Readers Day is an annual event sponsored by Pizza Hut. Schools are encouraged to invite guest readers to share the gift of reading with elementary students. For schools drawing at least ten Celebrity Readers, Pizza Hut offers a chance at $1000 for the school’s library.

“One of our teachers brought the concept to my attention. Since the program potentially benefits our library, I passed it on to our media specialist Joe DiTata. He did a great job organizing the entire event,” stated Tecler principal Terrie Dewey.

Assemblyman Tonko commented that both the program and the recently renovated Tecler building had impressed him.

“We spend our time in Albany fighting for building dollars. This is a wonderful opportunity to see the end product.”
