Amsterdam High School players are hitting the ice for the first time as they join other students to play on a local merged hockey team called the Mohawks.
The Mohawks are the longest-running merged team in Section II. Students from both Schenectady and Niskayuna joined forces back in the mid-1980s in order to be eligible to compete in the Capital District High School Hockey League. The team went on to win the Section II championships in 1994 and two years ago, they added Albany to the mix.
For the first time ever, Amsterdam students will be able to have players on the team. This marks the first time in the district’s history that students have been able to play in the league.
The following high school students are representing Amsterdam on the team:
- Ninth-grade student Peter Hans
- Tenth-grade student Andrew Velasco, and
- Twelfth-grade student Philip Hans.
The Mohawks will kick off their season on Friday, Nov. 29 against Franklin Academy at HVCC at 4:30 p.m.
