Greater Amsterdam School District voters approved the district’s proposition to sell the 20.4-acre property at 40 Henrietta Blvd. (formerly Clara S. Bacon Elementary School) for no less than $224,000. The proposition covered the proposed sale and price, but not the prospective buyer.
Residents approved the sale of the school by a vote of 201-41 or 83 percent (unofficial results).
Thousand Acres Associates, LLC (commonly known as Whispering Pines) has been operating a preschool program inside the former Clara S. Bacon School for the last 10 years.
While voter approval of the referendum gives the district the authority to sell the property to any purchaser, Whispering Pines will have the right to carry out the sales agreement approved by the GASD Board of Education in the spring.
If Whispering Pines elects not to buy the building by January 2020, then the district reserves the right to sell the building to another buyer.
“We want to thank everyone who took the time to vote today,” said Dr. Nellie Bush, board of education president. “We are thrilled that this property can continue to be a viable place for our community. It is wonderful to see that our community values keeping the property with the potential to maintain a unique school for the benefit of the children who attend. It is gratifying that our citizens came out to vote and make their wishes known.”
