Congratulations to Amsterdam High School senior Peyton Ausfeld, who signed a letter of intent Jan. 30 to attend and play football at Assumption College in Worcester, MA in the fall. Ausfeld was joined during an after school ceremony in the high school media center by many of his Ram teammates and coaches, his father Art and mother, Melissa.
During the signing ceremony Art Ausfeld reminisced about his son, who will play for the Division II Assumption Greyhounds, recalling his first year of youth football where he was one of the smallest players on his team.
“He was 49 pounds and almost didn’t make the minimum weight to play,” Art said. “I told him one time after he got knock down, ‘You don’t have to play this year if you don’t want to.’ But he pushed through it and persevered.”
Last fall, the Amsterdam senior running back earned Section II Class A All-Purpose Player of the Year honors.
Ausfeld finished the 2019 season with 1,372 rushing yards and accounted for 21 total touchdowns with 19 rushing scores, one receiving touchdown and one passing touchdown. Despite playing with a cast on his broken left wrist for much of the season and dealing with an ankle injury late in the season, Ausfeld ran for 100 or more yards in seven of Amsterdam’s nine games, including his school-record 322-yard performance in the Rams’ Week 4 win over Albany.
