The Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP) is a NYSED grant funded program through Fulton-Montgomery Community College whose aim is to provide academic and personal services to, and be a helping hand for, students in the Amsterdam School District to become successful in graduating on time.
One of the missions for LPP is to have a service learning component that the students can participate in throughout the school year.
“Our service learning project is the Weekend Backpack Program which is a partnership created with the Regional Food Bank,” said educator Kathie LaBarge. “We have found that there are many students in our community that go hungry on the weekends and these bags help fill that void. Our LPP students do the fundraising in order to pay for the food from the Regional Food Bank and then pack the bags weekly for the students that the school staff has noted as in need. The students that receive these bags find them beneficial and look forward to them each week. We continue to look to the public for help in our fundraising efforts.”
