Continuing Education

The Greater Amsterdam School District is proud to offer an extensive Continuing Education program for district residents. Non-residents are also welcome to attend classes.  Call Courtney Gawlak at 518-843-3180 x 7000 or email her at cgawlak@gasd.org.

Enrollment

Classes are open to school district residents and non-district residents. Preference is given to Amsterdam residents for space-limited classes.

Registration: All participants must be pre-registered. In fairness to our instructors, building staff, and other registrants, we do not accept registrations on a “walk-in” basis the first night of a class. Complete a registration form for each class. Make out a check or money order payable to Greater Amsterdam School District. We do not accept credit cards or cash.

There are two ways to register: in person at the District Office or by mail.

Bring your registration and payment to the Central Administration offices during office hours. Please note the Central Administration offices are now located in the BACK of Amsterdam High School. Parking available behind the gym.

Fees

  • Fees vary from class to class.
  • The district is pleased to offer reduced fees to seniors for the courses. To qualify for a senior discount you must be age 65 or over, or 55 and retired.
  • We do not prorate program fees based on attendance.
  • Typically, refunds are issued for program-cancelled classes only.
  • We DO NOT confirm your registration. We will notify you only if your registration cannot be accepted (i.e. if a class is full or has been canceled).

Class Offerings

Gentle Slow Flow Yoga

Time: 3:45 – 4:45 PM – AHS PLC Room

Gentle slow flow Yoga starts with a 15-20 minute warm up, 20 minutes of flow through variations on sun salutation, then 15-20 minute cool down/stretch & 5-minute savasana. Christine Riccio is a 500-hour Yoga teacher certified by Alliance. She has been teaching Yoga since July 2017 in various places.

Easy to Learn Self Defense for Adults

Join us for self-defense that is easy to learn, effective and practical. You will learn basic self-defense techniques to use against an attacker that will help you protect yourself and family. You don’t need any special skills or “be in shape” to be effective at self-defense. Bring an open mind, wear comfortable clothes and something to write with if you would like to take notes. This class is taught by Bonnie Streeter from the Zen Do Kai in Johnstown. Bonnie is co-

Stress; The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Medicare Made Clear

Whether you are approaching Medicare age, are already on Medicare, or a caregiver who assists parents or elderly relatives, finding the right Medicare coverage can be difficult. Having proper knowledge is essential for picking the right Medicare plan. At this workshop, you will learn all about Medicare basics, its parts, premiums, deductibles, how and when to apply and the qualifications for available assistance programs. Come join us to learn more. Mary is a NYS licensed Independent Agent, contracted with several local Medicare insurance companies. She also has a degree in Elementary Education and loves helping people understand Medicare. * The same presentation will be offered on each night. It is not necessary to attend both.
