Congratulations to four Amsterdam High School senior athletes, who signed letters of intent Wednesday (June 9) to attend college and continue their sports careers in soccer, football or basketball. A signing ceremony was held in the Amsterdam High School gym with their coaches, family and friends by their side.

Josiah Newborn
Josiah Newborn will be attending Utica College in the fall majoring in Sports Management and playing football for the Pioneers. He is a two-year Varsity Football letterman at wide receiver. He was named Captain for the 2021 season and team Most Valuable Player. Newborn’s accolades include being named 2021 Class A 1st team wide receiver and 2019 Class A 2nd team wide receiver. His biggest accomplishment this past season was breaking the New York State Public High School Athletic Association football record for most receptions in a single game at 22 again Averill Park. The previous record was 18 receptions in a game.

Karen Troche
Karen Troche will be attending Utica College in the fall and playing soccer for the Pioneers. Her major is undecided. A two-year Amsterdam Girls Varsity Soccer starter, she was acknowledged as one of the top goalies in the Foothills Council, averaging 15 saves per game. She attained a 3.0 grade point average at Amsterdam and is graduating No. 87 in her Class of 2021.

Yandeel Vazquez
Yandeel Vazquez will be attending SUNY Cobleskill in the fall and playing basketball for the Fighting Tigers. He was a three-year Varsity Basketball player at AHS. He averaged 17.8 points per game during his COVID shortened senior year. During his junior year he scored 329 points, averaging 15.7 points per game and posted a triple double against South Glens Falls. He was promoted to Varsity during his sophomore year and had his best game against Scotia-Glenville scoring 17 points, including hitting a 3-point shot on four straight possessions to end the half.

Thomas Ziskin
Thomas Ziskin will also be attending Utica College in the fall majoring in Construction Management and playing football for the Pioneers. He is a two-year Varsity Football letterman. A two-time starter at Quarterback, Ziskin was named Captain for the 2021 season. His accolades include throwing for 747 yards and five touchdowns as well as rushing for 199 yards and three touchdowns in five games this past season.
