On July 13, Governor Cuomo, the State Education Department, and Department of Health released guidelines for the reopening of schools. With the release of that information, school districts were required to submit a school reopening plan to the New York State Education Department by July 31. The GASD SAFER Committee has completed its draft reopening plan and submitted it to SED on that date. The link to the entire plan is posted below:

New York state has begun reviewing school district plans. The state then will approve, deny, or suggest changes to those plans. On Aug. 7, Gov. Cuomo announced that all schools in New York state will be able to reopen to students in September as long as COVID-19 infection numbers stay low and within the state’s parameters.

Sept. 16, 2020 – GASD announces in-person learning schedule changes
After a more than four-hour meeting tonight (Sept. 16), the Greater Amsterdam Board of Education approved the following school opening schedule changes for the 2020-21 school year:
- No change: Start of the Pre-Kindergarten program will continue to be delayed through Nov. 30. Further decisions to be made on when/if this will start due to financial reasons.
- No change: The Kindergarten program’s in-person instruction model will not begin until Oct. 5. Remote instruction for now.
- Change: Students in grades 1-5 and grades 9-12 will not begin in-person instruction (Purple and Gold groups) until Sept. 28. All students will continue remote instruction until that time. In-person instruction was originally scheduled to begin on Sept. 21.
- Change: Students in grades 6-8 at Lynch Literacy Academy will not begin in-person instruction (Purple and Gold groups) until Oct. 13 due to construction issues related to the ongoing capital project improvements. In-person instruction was originally scheduled to begin on Sept. 21.
Sept. 11, 2020 – District weighs cost-cutting measures in wake of looming $10 million state aid shortfall
Faced with a potential 20 percent cut in state aid to education in 2020-21 and no federal stimulus help in sight, the Greater Amsterdam School District is continuing to review further cost-cutting measures to persevere through the school year.Superintendent Richard Ruberti will present new alternatives for revenue savings to the Board of Education Wednesday night as the district faces a possible overall loss of some $10 million in state due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Sept. 10, 2020 – NYSPHSAA: Football, volleyball, cheer seasons postponed til spring
High school football, volleyball, and competitive cheer will be sitting on the sidelines this fall. The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) announced Sept. 9 that those seasons will be postponed until March 1, to address concerns about high-risk fall sports. This includes practices. Low and moderate-risk sports can begin on Sept. 21, as previously announced. MORE INFORMATION
Aug. 31, 2020 – Pre-K program suspended through Nov. 30, Kindergarten in-person instruction postponed until Oct. 5
The GASD Board of Education voted Aug. 31 to suspended the Pre-K program through Nov. 30 due to financial reasons. To date, there is still much uncertainty over whether the state will fund the program due to the economic crisis surrounding COVID-19. A decision on the future of the Pre-K program for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year will be made as more information becomes available. The district is also postponing the timeline for the return of Kindergarten students to school until October 5 so it can better prepared to support children both academically and emotionally. Aug. 24, 2020 – Cuomo announces all fall sports teams will be able to practice Sept. 21 and ‘low risk’ sports can play
Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Aug. 24 that state athletic teams will be able to begin practicing on Sept. 21 and that some will be allowed to play games soon after. Cuomo said at his press briefing that “low-risk” sports that GASD offers including tennis, soccer, cross country, and golf would be allowed to begin fall activities later next month and then compete locally. Competition would follow a required number of preseason practices for all but golf, which does not mandate them. MORE INFORMATION

Aug. 7, 2020: Gov. Cuomo gives green light to reopening schools in the fall
Today, Gov. Cuomo announced that New York state schools will be able to reopening to students in September as long as COVID-19 infection numbers stay low. The governor previously said schools can only open in regions that are in phase four and have a coronavirus infection rate of 5% or less on a rolling 14-day average. Every district currently meets that threshold, according to Cuomo. Superintendent Ruberti addresses the school community on the reopening issue.
Aug. 5, 2020 – Remote Only Learning option now available to GASD families, sign up online no later than Aug. 19
The Greater Amsterdam School District has revised its Reopening Schools Plan to give parents the option of choosing a Remote Only Learning (ROL) at home model for their child(ren) for the start of the 2020-21 school year. Parents/guardians must complete this online form no later than Aug. 19, 2020 to choose this ROL option and meet all procedures and requirements posted below:

July 17, 2020 – State delays start of fall sports season
NYSPHSAA (the New York State Public High School Athletic Association) has announced that the start date for Fall sports has been pushed back to September 21st and the Fall Regional and State Championships have been cancelled due to COVID 19 pandemic.
