The Greater Amsterdam School District announces the appointment of Dr. Matthew Lewis (Ed. D.) as the new Principal of Lynch Literacy Academy. Lewis has been an educational administrator and teacher in the area for some 20 years.

He was appointed to the LLA position at the July Board of Education meeting after a lengthy interview process and will officially begin in the district on Aug. 23. He replaces former LLA Principal Elizabeth Hanan who resigned in June.

“We are pleased to have someone with Dr. Lewis’ experience join us in Amsterdam as he will be a tremendous addition to our leadership team,” said GASD Superintendent Richard Ruberti. “He is anxious to get started.”

Lewis comes to GASD from the Mayfield Central School District where he has held a variety of leadership roles since 2014. He has a wide range of experience working with students from Pre-Kindergarten through high school, and has been an administrator at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

His recent duties at Mayfield include serving as Assistant Elementary School Principal, COVID-19 Safety Coordinator, District Director of Buildings and Grounds (where he oversaw a 2017 capital project), Director of Security, Data Protection Officer and 504 Coordinator.

Prior to Mayfield, Lewis was employed by Gloversville Enlarged School District for many years where he was an interim administrator, Dean of Students, Academic Intervention Services (AIS) Coordinator, grant writer and secondary English teacher. He’s also taught in the Greater Johnstown School District and at the Neil Hellman School at Parsons in Albany.

Lewis earned a Doctor of Education (Ed. D.) degree from Sage Graduate School, a master’s degree in English education from the College of Saint Rose, and a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Norwich University Military College of Vermont.
