English as a New Language

These are NY State mandated courses for all students eligible for services based on the HLQ, Home Language Questionnaire, and results on the NYSITELL, New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners or the NYSESLAT, New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test. 

Entering ENL

2 periods ENL | 1 credit / 1 period Integrated ELA | 1 credit

This is a two period course designed to introduce the English as new language student to the grammar, usage, vocabulary and sentence structure of the English language.  Instruction emphasizes English speaking and listening comprehension.  Reading and guided writing are also introduced.  Student will also have 1 period of Integrated ENL.  Placement in this course is determined by the student score on the NYSITELL or NYSESLAT exam. 

Emerging ENL

1 period ENL | 1 credit / 1 period Integrated ENL | 1 credit

This course is a one period designed to continue instruction in oral communication for the English as a new language student.  Instruction includes grammar, usage, vocabulary and sentence structure.  The emphasis is placed on developing academic reading and writing skills.  Student will also have 1 period of Integrated ENL. Placement in this course is determined by the student score on the NYSITELL or NYSESLAT exam.

Integrated ELA/Content Courses

1 period | 1 credit

These courses are designed to support English as a new language students in content area classes to acquire academic English proficiency in all skill areas; reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students scoring at the levels of transitioning, expanding and commanding based on the NYSITELL or NYSESLAT will be placed in these courses.
