On Sunday, Oct. 26, Gunnery Sergeant Dana Allison and Cadet Captain Ryan Adams of Amsterdam High School’s JROTC program completed the United States Marine Corps Marathon in Quantico, Va. The two spent nearly a year preparing both physically and mentally for the event.
“I am incredibly proud of these two,” said First Sergeant James Bautista. “It has been admirable to witness their commitment, discipline, and perseverance as they worked toward this achievement. Gunnery Sergeant Allison finished in under three hours and 25 minutes, placing 12th in her age group. Cadet Captain Adams finished just above four hours and 30 minutes, demonstrating determination throughout the course.”
Bautista added that their example reflects the values of the JROTC program and the greater Amsterdam community. “Their actions show what dedication and leadership look like in real time,” he said. “They have led by example, setting a standard for our high school, our program, and the entire City of Amsterdam.”
Adams shared that the marathon was both a physical and mental challenge he set for himself. “To prepare, I followed a structured training schedule, running early in the mornings before school and participating in physical training with JROTC,” he said. “The encouragement and guidance from First Sergeant Bautista and Gunnery Sergeant Allison played a major role in keeping me motivated and focused on my goal.”
“There were mornings when getting out of bed to train was difficult, but I reminded myself why I began this journey—to push beyond my limits and grow through the process,” Adams added. “Crossing the finish line was more than completing a race; it proved that dedication and hard work pay off.”
The experience, Adams said, reinforced one of the key lessons of the JROTC program: growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone.
“Motivation gets you started. Discipline keeps you going,” said Bautista, quoting author John C. Maxwell. “That’s what these two have shown us.”
