Nine Amsterdam High School JROTC cadets recently competed in the Spartan Stadion 5K at Fenway Park in Boston, an event featuring 20 obstacles and more than 6,000 participants.
“This trip would not have been possible without the efforts of Mr. Ruberti, Mrs. Polikowski, Mrs. Schaefer, Mrs. McGaffin, Mrs. Elwood, Mrs. Barnhill, Mrs. Borenko, and Mrs. Couture,” said First Sgt. (Ret.) James Bautista, Senior Marine Instructor at Amsterdam High School. “Every bit of effort was truly worth it, and it was a privilege to work alongside such dedicated leadership to see it all come together.”
The cadets represented Amsterdam with focus, resilience and pride, demonstrating teamwork and discipline throughout the challenging course that wound over the Green Monster and through the clubhouse.
Competing for Amsterdam were Ryan Adams, Rjay Rivera, John Malec, Miguel Medina, Alyessa Rivera, Jadyel Albino, Yeriel Taveras, Juliana Valls and Jayden Murphy.
A standout performance came from Cadet Rjay Rivera, who placed 256th out of 6,045 competitors with a finishing time of 45:09.
“These young men and women have been preparing for over two months and overcame challenges that required both physical grit and mental strength,” Bautista said. “They’re returning to Amsterdam with stronger confidence, teamwork and a renewed sense of leadership. We look forward to bringing the lessons learned back into our school and community.”
