Students in the Life Skills program at Amsterdam High School recently put their creativity, teamwork and problem-solving skills to the test during an Egg Drop Challenge.
The project challenged students to design and build a device capable of protecting a raw egg from breaking when dropped from a height of 10 feet onto a hard surface. Working in groups, students were required to follow specific guidelines, including selecting only six materials from an approved supply list and ensuring every group member participated in the design and construction process.
Before testing their creations, students made predictions about whether their designs would successfully protect the egg. Once construction was complete, groups gathered outside for the final test as their teacher dropped each device.
The challenge created an engaging learning environment that encouraged critical thinking, collaboration and hands-on problem-solving. Students enthusiastically supported one another throughout the activity, cheering on classmates as each design was tested.
The Egg Drop Challenge provided students with an opportunity to apply engineering concepts while developing teamwork and communication skills in a fun and interactive setting. The project highlighted the value of experiential learning and gave students a memorable opportunity to put their ideas into action.
