English as a New Language
These are NY State mandated courses for all students eligible for services based on the HLQ, Home Language Questionnaire, and results on the NYSITELL, New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners or the NYSESLAT, New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test.
Latin American Literature for ELLs
This course will introduce English Language Learners to major literary topics and themes within a variety of Latin American nations and cultures. Students discuss and analyze the cultural, social, political, historical and economic contexts of a variety of historical and contemporary Latin American literary works. Topics to be examined include Latino identity, language, immigration, civil rights and gender roles. Each marking period and semester are structured by theme and will focus on novels, short stories, poems and informational texts with a final writing assessment.
ENL Stand Alone
1 period | 1 credit
This course is designed to introduce the English as a new language student to the grammar, usage, vocabulary and sentence structure of the English language. Instruction emphasizes English speaking and listening comprehension. Reading and guided writing are also introduced. Placement in this course is determined by the student score on the NYSITELL or NYSESLAT exam.
Integrated ELA and/or Content Area Courses
1 period | 1 credit
These courses are designed to support English as a new language students in content area classes to acquire academic English proficiency in all skill areas; reading, writing, listening and speaking. Placement in one or more of these courses is determined by the student's NYSITELL or NYSESLAT scores.
