As part of our ongoing commitment to the security and well-being of our students, we would like to provide you with a comprehensive update following the parent/guardian safety meeting held last week.
In response to the discussions during the meeting, we are implementing several measures to enhance security within our district:
1. Increased Police Presence: There will be an augmented police presence at district buildings to ensure a heightened level of security.
2. Enhanced Bag Checks: All high school students will now undergo thorough bag checks and pass through metal detectors upon entering the building. Previously, due to staffing shortages, these checks were conducted randomly.
3. Additional Metal Detector: A third metal detector has been installed at the high school to facilitate a priority line for rapidly screening students without bags or those opting for clear bags. The district will provide clear bags, in drawstring and backpack styles, at no cost to families.
4. Optional Clear Bags: The use of clear bags will be optional, and not mandatory. Families may request additional clear bags for middle school students, if needed. The district has invested approximately $3,000 to ensure an adequate supply for high school students.
5. Increased Staffing: Efforts are underway to hire additional hall monitors, a security officer, and a safety and crisis support specialist. Alarms will be installed on side entrances and exits around the high school to immediately alert officials to any unauthorized building access.
6. Security Assessment: Altaris Consulting Group will conduct a comprehensive security assessment, addressing emergency planning, staff training, and implementing projects. This initiative, covered by a $110,000 contract, is subject to final authorization by the Board of Education later this month.
7. Anonymous Reporting App: The district is working towards acquiring an anonymous reporting app accessible to students and families. This measure aims to encourage the reporting of concerning behavior or threats without fear of reprisals. Tips received will be promptly forwarded to local law enforcement.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we prioritize the safety of our students. For any further inquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Rich Ruberti
