A group of students were involved in an incident in the Amsterdam High School commons on Monday, May. 6, 2024.

The high school staff intervened following emergency response protocols to immediately diffuse the incident. Local police were called and attended the situation, successfully diffusing it. As per safety procedures, a hold was put in place from 8:45 a.m. to 10 a.m.

“Violence is never the answer and we do not tolerate it in our schools,” said Superintendent of Schools Richard Ruberti. “We want our community to know that the district takes these situations very seriously. We are committed to embracing a school culture where all students demonstrate respect for themselves, their peers, and staff.”

All students are held to standards outlined in the district’s code of conduct, including disciplinary procedures. Students are also expected to follow the high school handbook.

Student safety is paramount in the Greater Amsterdam School District. Our district schools have been focusing on being places that are free from violence. The district takes the idea of this school culture seriously, and has been implementing programs in every building that promote kindness, inclusivity, and positive behavior.

“We work tirelessly to make our school a safe and welcoming place for students, and we will continue to reinforce appropriate behavior and build a positive school climate,” said Amsterdam High School Principal Mike Gennett. “This is not representative of the culture we want for our school.”

The school district is scheduled to convene on Wednesday, May 8, with representatives from local law enforcement, county, and city officials. The purpose of this meeting is to review collaboration opportunities aimed at addressing behavioral concerns effectively.

High school students who need additional support at any time are encouraged to contact the high school’s counseling office.

Sincerely,
Richard Ruberti
