Amsterdam, NY — The Greater Amsterdam School District (GASD) is pleased to announce a potential partnership with First Student, pending Board of Education approval, to provide enhanced student transportation services. This collaboration would introduce new technology, and driver recruitment efforts to improve safety, efficiency, and communication for GASD students and families.
Investing in Drivers for a Stronger Future
To address driver shortages and improve service reliability, First Student has committed to:
• Offering employment to all the drivers and monitors of the current transportation provider who meet the standards of the company and The Greater Amsterdam School District. First Student will offer highly competitive wages, guaranteed hours, and a significant sign-on bonus to attract and retain skilled transportation professionals.
Enhanced Technology for Parents and Schools
If approved, several new tools and systems would provide greater visibility and efficiency in transportation services:
First View Tracking App – Parents and students could track buses in real time for added convenience and peace of mind.
District Dashboard – School administrators would have improved access to transportation data, allowing for better oversight and service adjustments.
Driver Tablets – Equipped with route navigation, real-time pre/post-trip inspections, and enhanced communications.
Behavior Incident Reporting – A new web-based system would ensure efficient tracking and resolution of student behavior concerns on buses.
Advanced Security and Monitoring Systems
GASD remains committed to student safety, and this potential partnership would introduce new security measures, including:
Safe Fleet Digital Video System – Installed on all buses to enhance surveillance and security.
Child Check-Mate System – Ensuring no child is left unattended on a bus.
Theft-Mate Security System – Motion-activated technology to prevent unauthorized entry into buses.
Driver Scoring System – Tracking driver performance metrics to promote safe driving practices.
Strengthening Community Engagement
To increase transparency and accountability, a new web-based feedback portal would allow parents and community members to submit suggestions, compliments, or concerns about transportation services.
“We are excited about the potential to bring these advancements to our transportation services,” said Superintendent Richard Ruberti. “With First Student’s commitment to safety, technology, and driver support, we believe these improvements would greatly benefit our students, families, and school community.”
Pending Board of Education approval, GASD looks forward to finalizing this agreement and keeping families updated on next steps.
