Student Award

Amsterdam High School senior Destenie Lizius has been selected as a recipient of the Peter R. Marsh Foundation Silent Servant Scholarship for her service and leadership through HFM BOCES Career and Technical Education. Lizius is currently enrolled in the Medical Assisting program.

The scholarship recognizes high school students who have demonstrated compassion and commitment to serving others without seeking recognition. Lizius was nominated for her extensive volunteer work, academic achievements and involvement in local and statewide advocacy efforts.

Her volunteer work includes serving as a Patient Care Technician at St. Mary’s Healthcare, a Blood Donor Ambassador for the American Red Cross, and as a contributor to foster youth legislation with state lawmakers and the Fair Futures organization. She helped organize a press conference at the New York State Capitol to advocate for Senate Bill 3781, which aims to provide durable luggage to youth in foster care. Lizius is also a member of the NYS Youth Leadership Board Council, where she annually speaks on needed changes within the foster care system.

Lizius has participated in several research and academic programs, including the Albany Medical College Science & Technology Program, Harvard University’s Science Research Conference, and a medical ethics internship at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Her work has focused on topics ranging from maternal health disparities to the ethical implications of artificial intelligence in healthcare.

At Amsterdam High School, Lizius is a student-athlete in track and field, Student Government Association treasurer, and member of the Athletic Leadership Club and Operation Smile. She has also served on Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara’s Student Cabinet, engaging in public education policy discussions.

“Destenie is a mature, independent learner who demonstrates strong critical thinking skills and consistently takes initiative in both academic and professional settings,” said Lauren Wohlgemuth, Medical Assisting instructor at HFM CTE. “Her genuine character, reliability, and ability to work with autonomy set her apart as a standout student. This well-earned academic scholarship reflects her dedication and potential for continued success.”

Following graduation, Lizius plans to earn her certification in medical assisting and attend the University of Michigan to study biology with a possible minor in public policy. Her long-term goal is to attend medical school and continue advocating for underserved populations.

Lizius expressed gratitude for the scholarship and the opportunity to be recognized for her service while balancing academics, athletics and community involvement.
