The Greater Amsterdam Board of Education has issued a statement in response to recent concerns regarding inappropriate social media posts made by an individual board member. The content of the posts has been perceived by members of the community as supportive of bullying behavior.
The Board emphasized that the personal views expressed on a private social media account do not reflect the values, mission or beliefs of the Greater Amsterdam Board of Education.
“We do not and will not tolerate bullying in any form—whether in schools, online, or in our broader community,” the statement reads. “We are committed to maintaining a safe, inclusive and respectful environment for all students, staff and community members.”
Board members acknowledged the serious impact the posts have had on students, staff, families and the greater Amsterdam community, and reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, respect and integrity.
“While individual board members are entitled to their personal views, those views must never contradict our shared responsibility to uphold the dignity and safety of all students,” the Board stated. “Please know, the independent views of this board member are not the views of the Board of Education as a whole, and we do not condone the message such posts convey.”
The Board confirmed it is addressing the matter in accordance with district policies and procedures and expressed appreciation for the continued support of the community as it works to ensure Amsterdam schools remain safe and welcoming for all.
