AHS Students Give Back

Amsterdam High School art students volunteered their time and talents on May 18 to help create a public mural on East Main Street as part of this year’s 518 Day community efforts.

Working alongside mural artist Eugene O’Neill and the Creative Connections Clubhouse, students contributed to a large-scale artwork that now reads “We are community” across a bold blue sky. The mural is intended to add vibrancy to the East End neighborhood and provide a welcoming message to residents and visitors.

The project offered students the opportunity to take part in a community improvement initiative while also applying their artistic skills in a real-world setting.

“Projects like this help our students understand the value of giving back to their community while learning how their talents can make a visible impact,” Superintendent Richard Ruberti said. “It’s about connection, pride and service—things that stay with them beyond the classroom.”

The mural, located in a high-traffic area of the city, will serve as a lasting reminder of the collaboration between students, artists and local organizations.
