The Greater Amsterdam School District is partnering with Cartwheel, a virtual mental health provider, to expand access to mental health support for students and families across the district.
Through this partnership, students and families can access licensed therapists and psychiatrists with no waitlist. Appointments are available within days and can be scheduled between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. via telehealth. Services are offered in multiple languages, including English and Spanish.
Cartwheel provides individual therapy sessions for students in grades 3 and up, as well as parent guidance sessions at all grade levels. These sessions are designed to support families with strategies for addressing their child’s mental health needs. Services are free for families with Medicaid or who are uninsured, and Cartwheel is an in-network provider for many private insurance plans.
Referrals to Cartwheel can be made by members of the school counseling team, including social workers, guidance counselors and administrators. Families may also reach out directly to request support. Common concerns addressed include anxiety, stress, depression, trauma and school avoidance.
Expanding access to mental health care is a critical part of supporting student well-being. Mental health challenges can affect academic performance, attendance and peer relationships. By removing barriers such as long waitlists, transportation, and language limitations, the district is helping ensure that all students and families can receive timely, appropriate support when they need it most.
To learn more about Cartwheel or request a referral, families are encouraged to contact the school’s counseling team.
