The Greater Amsterdam School District recently completed its fourth year of Summer Enrichment Programs, bringing together more than 200 students from across the district for hands-on learning experiences in YouCubed Math and LEGO Robotics.

Hosted at Tecler Elementary School, the programs welcomed students in grades 1 through 8 for a full day of engaging activities, including morning and afternoon sessions, as well as breakfast and lunch. The strong turnout reflected the community’s continued enthusiasm for meaningful summer learning opportunities that extend beyond the school year.

This year, the program expanded to include VEX Robotics kits for the district’s oldest students, who built and programmed more complex creations such as robotic arms and automated vehicles. Meanwhile, YouCubed Math activities encouraged a growth mindset and deeper mathematical understanding through visual learning, collaborative problem-solving and student-centered instruction.

“We’ve been integrating STEM and robotics throughout our district, and it’s been exciting to see how students are responding to these opportunities,” said Superintendent Richard Ruberti. “Programs like this are a great example of how hands-on learning can connect with what’s happening in the classroom during the school year.”

“After teaching this program each summer since it started four years ago, I was excited to step into a new role as administrator,” said Megan Togaila, Summer Enrichment principal. “What makes this program so successful—and so well attended—is the dedication and thoughtful planning of our teachers. I was also super impressed with our students. They showed such strong collaboration, problem-solving and creativity. Watching them work together and support one another was a real highlight of the week.”

The Summer Enrichment Programs continue to emphasize critical thinking, teamwork and applied learning. Students explored mathematical concepts, built LEGO creations through computer programming, solved problems and collaborated in a fun, supportive environment. With continued growth each year, the Summer Enrichment Programs remain a cornerstone of the district’s commitment to innovative learning beyond the traditional school calendar.
