The Greater Amsterdam School District has appointed Meaghan Butterfield as its K-12 director of curriculum and instruction, effective July 1.
Butterfield has 17 years of experience in education. She earned a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Marist College, a Master of Science in education with a concentration in special and general education from Manhattan College, an advanced graduate certificate in educational policy and leadership from the University at Albany, and an advanced graduate certificate from the University of Plattsburgh. She holds professional certifications as a school building leader, school district leader, childhood education (grades 1-6), students with disabilities (grades 1-6), and students with disabilities generalist (grades 5-9).
She began her career as a middle school special education teacher at Averill Park Central School District, where she taught for two years. She then spent nine years as a middle and high school special education teacher at Brunswick Central School District.

In 2019, Butterfield became assistant principal at Marie Curie Institute of Engineering and Communications, serving for two years before being named principal in 2021. As principal, she helped lead the school to LSI School Standing status in 2022-23 and 2023-24, oversaw improvements in ELA and math scores, and established teams and protocols to support students and staff, including the Child Study Team, Data Team Protocol and Attendance Team. She also served on district committees for attendance, safety, RTI/MTSS and the District Comprehensive Improvement Plan.
“As I enter my seventh year at GASD and assume the role of K-12 director of curriculum and instruction, I am deeply grateful for the professional experiences and personal growth that have shaped my journey to this point,” Butterfield said. “I’ve had the privilege of working alongside a talented and dedicated staff, and I’ve truly valued the opportunity to engage with the incredible families and students who make this community so special. I look forward to continuing this important work together—cultivating learning, supporting growth and shaping the future with a team and community I deeply value.”
The district is grateful for Butterfield’s leadership and commitment to student success and looks forward to the positive impact she will continue to make in this new role.
