Dear Parents & Guardians,
We are writing to inform you of a recent incident involving a possible data breach of two student accounts within the Greater Amsterdam School District. On Aug. 12, the District was contacted by the Amsterdam Police Department regarding a report that the accounts may have been compromised after the students responded to a phishing email.
Our Director of Technology, Eric Scholl, is actively investigating the incident to determine the process, depth, and extent of any unauthorized access. A full forensic review is underway, and additional information will be shared as it becomes available.
While this incident appears to be limited in scope, we are required under New York State Education Law 2-D to notify our community of any potential breach of protected student information, even outside the regular school year. If it is confirmed that any personal data was accessed, the affected students and their families will receive a detailed notification letter.
We remain committed to safeguarding all student accounts and data. Our staff regularly participates in training on cybersecurity best practices, and we urge students and families to exercise caution when interacting with unexpected emails or messages.
Former students seeking additional information can contact our Director of Technology, Eric Scholl, at 518-843-3180 ext. 7510 or dataprivacy@gasd.org.
Sincerely,
Richard Ruberti
GASD Superintendent of Schools
