Amsterdam High School has once again been recognized as a Special Olympics Unified Champion School, renewing its national banner status through Special Olympics North America. This distinction represents the highest level of achievement for Unified Champion Schools, honoring excellence in building inclusive school communities.

Amsterdam joins nine other New York high schools in receiving the national banner designation this year. The honor reflects the school’s ongoing commitment to fostering inclusion, leadership, and opportunity for all students.

In Unified Champion Schools, students with and without disabilities play on the same sports teams, participate in physical education classes together, and lead schoolwide initiatives to promote acceptance and inclusion. At AHS, these programs have become an integral part of school culture, giving students the opportunity to learn teamwork, leadership, and respect both on and off the field.

“We are proud that Amsterdam High School continues to be recognized as a Unified Champion School,” said Superintendent Richard Ruberti. “This achievement reflects the hard work of our students, staff, and coaches who lead by example and demonstrate the power of inclusion in education and athletics.”

To qualify for banner status, schools must meet 10 national standards of excellence in areas such as Unified Sports, inclusive youth leadership, and whole-school engagement. Schools must also show sustainability or plans to continue these inclusive practices long-term. Amsterdam High School’s renewal underscores its dedication to creating a welcoming environment for every student.

With this recognition, Amsterdam High School remains part of a growing statewide movement. Across New York, more than 375 schools are now engaged in Unified Sports, with thousands of students participating as Unified Athletes and Unified Partners.
