As Superintendent of Schools, I want to reaffirm our District’s unwavering commitment to fostering a safe, supportive, and inclusive educational environment for all students. Every young person who walks through our doors deserves to feel valued, respected, and able to learn without fear or discrimination.

Recently, the District issued a memo to staff outlining expectations regarding communication with students who identify as transgender or gender non-conforming. This memo was shared with the community at large, where it has faced mischaracterization and false rumors surrounding our District.

Under ordinary circumstances, the District would not issue a public statement on an internal staff memo. However, given the recent circulation of misinformation and speculation on social media, it has become necessary to address the matter directly in order to provide clarity and quell rumors.

Please be aware the memo reflects the current guidance issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). As a public school district, we are legally and ethically obligated to follow state and federal requirements, and to ensure our practices align with those directives.

I recognize that topics involving gender identity can prompt differing viewpoints across our community. It is important to be clear: Our District is not independently creating policy in this area. We are implementing the directives provided by NYSED, which serve as the framework for all public schools across New York State.

Locally, our responsibility is to uphold the law, protect the rights of all students, and maintain a learning environment where every child feels safe and respected. I am proud to say our educators and support staff do this daily. They create and sustain classrooms where students feel safe, supported, and challenged to achieve their best. Their dedication, professionalism, and compassion make it possible for our District to provide the highest quality education, while nurturing the social and emotional well-being of every learner. Our focus will always be on providing the best environment for students to learn.

We remain committed to working in partnership with families, staff, and the broader community to ensure that our schools reflect the values of dignity and educational excellence. Together, we can continue to prioritize the well-being and success of every student we serve.

Thank You,

Richard Ruberti
