AHS Earns National Honor for Inclusion

Amsterdam High School has renewed its recognition as a Special Olympics Unified Champion School, once again earning national banner status through Special Olympics North America. This honor, the highest level of achievement for Unified Champion Schools, highlights AHS’s ongoing commitment to building an inclusive school community.

Unified Champion Schools bring together students with and without disabilities to compete on the same sports teams, participate in physical education classes and lead schoolwide initiatives that promote acceptance. At AHS, these programs have become a core part of school culture, giving students opportunities to learn teamwork, leadership and respect both on and off the field.

“This recognition demonstrates that our students and staff are consistently meeting the standards of an inclusive school community,” Superintendent Richard Ruberti said. AHS joins nine other New York high schools earning banner status this year, part of a statewide movement involving more than 375 schools.

Summer Enrichment Programs Mark Four Years of Growth

The Greater Amsterdam School District recently completed its fourth year of Summer Enrichment Programs, welcoming more than 200 students in grades 1–8 for full-day learning in YouCubed Math and LEGO Robotics at Tecler Elementary School. The programs included breakfast and lunch and continued to draw strong interest from families across the district.

This summer, older students also worked with VEX Robotics kits, designing advanced projects such as robotic arms and automated vehicles. YouCubed Math emphasized growth mindset strategies through collaborative problem-solving and visual learning.

“These programs show how hands-on STEM opportunities can connect with classroom learning,” Superintendent Richard Ruberti said. Summer Enrichment Principal Megan Togaila added, “The success of the program reflects the dedication of teachers and the creativity, collaboration and problem-solving skills of students.”

The enrichment programs continue to be a cornerstone of the district’s commitment to innovative summer learning.

Summer Sports Clinic Builds Skills and Community

The Greater Amsterdam School District’s Summer Sports Clinic brought together young athletes for six weeks of training and fun in partnership with the Amsterdam Summer Camp. Each day, between 50 and 80 students worked with district coaches to strengthen skills in a variety of sports while learning the values of teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship.

Programs like the Sports Clinic provide students with opportunities to stay active, develop healthy habits and grow both physically and socially during the summer months.

On Aug. 7, the program was featured by News Channel 13’s Chris Onorato, who highlighted its positive impact on the community.

The district thanks Mayor Michael Cinquanti, Sen. Patricia Fahy, Superintendent Richard Ruberti, Board of Education President Rev. Kent McHeard, Athletic Director John Salls, Athletic Trainer Carla Pasquarelli, Recreational Director Rob Spagnola, Creative Connections Assistant Director John Sumpter, Photographer Robert Rodriguez and all coaches for their support.

Students Lead with Tribute at Amsterdam’s 9/11 Memorial Service

The Greater Amsterdam School District Select Chorus and MCJROTC took part in the community’s annual 9/11 Memorial Service at Riverlink Park on Thursday, Sept. 11. The solemn ceremony honored the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and recognized the continued service of first responders and military personnel.

As part of the program, the Select Chorus performed the National Anthem, lending their voices to a moment of reflection that united the community in remembrance. The MCJROTC also participated in the service, representing the district with dignity and respect. Their involvement underscored the important role young people play in carrying forward the values of service, resilience and civic responsibility.

The memorial service brought together community members, local officials and organizations for an observance that has become a lasting tradition in Amsterdam. Each year, the ceremony serves as a reminder of the nation’s collective loss while also affirming the importance of unity and shared commitment to one another.

By participating, GASD students were able to contribute in a meaningful way to this message of remembrance. Their performances highlighted not only their talents but also the district’s strong connection with the Amsterdam community. Events such as this allow students to see firsthand how their efforts can impact others and provide opportunities to learn the value of civic engagement outside the classroom.

The district extends its gratitude to the organizers of the memorial service for including GASD students in the program. By offering them a chance to take part, the community provided an opportunity for young people to join in honoring the past while also looking ahead with a spirit of unity and resilience.

Carla Pasquarelli Honored with National Servant’s Heart Award

Greater Amsterdam School District Athletic Trainer Carla Pasquarelli has received national recognition for her commitment to student-athlete care. At the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Convention in Orlando, Florida, Pasquarelli was presented with the Servant’s Heart Award, one of only 12 individuals nationwide to receive the honor this year.

The award recognizes athletic trainers who demonstrate exceptional service, compassion and leadership in sports safety and injury prevention. Recipients are nominated by peers for their contributions to schools and communities.

Pasquarelli has been a constant presence at Amsterdam High School, supporting athletes in every sport through injury care, prevention and education on safe practices. Her dedication ensures student-athletes are not only cared for physically but also guided toward lifelong wellness.

The district congratulates Pasquarelli on this achievement, which reflects GASD’s ongoing commitment to student health and safety.
