The Greater Amsterdam School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Molly L. Schaefer as principal of Amsterdam High School. Schaefer, who has served as interim principal since September, will now lead the high school on a permanent basis.
Schaefer joined the district in 2023 as assistant principal, where she worked closely with staff to enhance student engagement, strengthen academic programs, and promote a positive school culture. Prior to her time in Amsterdam, she spent more than a decade in the Schenectady City School District, where she served as Dean of Student Engagement, a middle school Social Inquiry teacher, and a high school French teacher.
She holds certification in Educational Leadership from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, a master’s degree in Teaching English to Students of Other Languages from SUNY Albany, and a bachelor’s degree in Adolescence Education and French with honors from SUNY Oneonta.
In addition, Mike Gennett has been named interim assistant principal at Amsterdam High School. Gennett has served as principal of AHS since 2024 and will now support the transition and administrative team in this new interim capacity.
Superintendent Richard Ruberti said the changes reflect the district’s continued commitment to strong and steady leadership at Amsterdam High School.
“Both Molly and Mike bring exceptional experience and dedication to our students and staff,” said Ruberti. “Their collaboration will ensure Amsterdam High School continues to thrive and maintain a focus on academic excellence and student success.”
