The Greater Amsterdam School District’s AI Taskforce continues its educational series with AI Update #3, exploring the topic of Generative AI—tools such as ChatGPT or Gemini that help users create new and original content.
Generative AI can be thought of as a creative partner that supports students in writing stories, composing poems, or producing digital art.
“These tools encourage students to think creatively and experiment with ideas in new ways,” the taskforce shared.
The process behind Generative AI is simple: it studies millions of examples such as books, drawings, and photos; learns how those examples are structured; and then creates new work based on what it has learned. When a student provides a prompt or instruction, the AI uses that knowledge to generate something new.
Beyond being a fun learning experience, these tools are helping students build creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
Families are encouraged to explore Generative AI safely and responsibly at home. Try prompts such as:
Designing a superhero headquarters for one who talks to trees.
Inventing a board game about a secret treasure.
Writing from the perspective of an animal for a day.
Creating and describing a new, imaginary animal that might live locally.
The district emphasizes that AI is meant to support learning—not replace it.
AI is a tool, not a replacement.
