Lynch Literacy Academy held a schoolwide Veterans Day assembly on Monday, Nov. 10, to recognize and honor the men and women who serve and have served in the United States Armed Forces. The event brought students, staff and community members together to learn about the significance of the holiday and to celebrate the veterans connected to the school community.
The assembly featured special guests, including Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, who served in the United States Army; Andrew Whittingham, Montgomery County’s Veteran Peer Advocate, who completed 30 years of service in the Army; and Amsterdam Mayor Michael Cinquanti, who shared the history behind the naming of the Lynch Auditorium in honor of Amsterdam veteran Michael Lynch.
Lynch also honored the veteran family members of students and staff, as well as current and retired Greater Amsterdam School District employees who have served in the military: CJ Rivera (Army), James Bautista (Marines), Dana Allison (Marines), Eric Scholl (Army), Wendy Sweezey (Navy) and retired art teacher Dr. William Bouton (Army).
The school’s own veteran staff members — Christopher Clizbe (Navy), Joshua Bartman (Air Force) and Tommie Ann Sutton (Marines) — were also recognized and celebrated by students, who gave them an enthusiastic ovation.
Throughout the week, students and staff enjoyed viewing the school’s “Wall of Heroes,” which displayed photos and names of family members and friends connected to the Lynch community who have served in the military.
The event emphasized gratitude, respect and community pride as Lynch Literacy Academy recognized the sacrifices of those who protect and defend the nation.
