Prekindergarten students at Tecler Elementary School recently took their first field trip to Amsterdam City Hall as part of a classroom unit focused on buildings and the roles they play in the community.
During the visit, students toured City Hall alongside the city historian, who shared information about the building’s history, architecture and purpose. Students learned how City Hall was constructed, why it is an important part of the city and how it serves residents.
Students also met with the city’s building inspector and mayor, who discussed their responsibilities and explained how their work helps keep the city safe and operating efficiently.
The visit provided students with a real-world connection to their classroom learning.
“Opportunities like this help our youngest learners understand how their community works and see themselves as part of it,” Tecler Elementary Principal John Miller said. “This experience allowed them to connect their studies to the world beyond the classroom in a meaningful way.”
The field trip supported instructional goals by reinforcing lessons on community buildings and civic roles through hands-on learning.
