The Greater Amsterdam School District is providing an update regarding a threat received at Amsterdam High School on Tuesday, Feb. 24.
At approximately 9:27 a.m., the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a phone call placed to Amsterdam High School threatening school violence. Out of an abundance of caution, the district was placed in a lockout, and Amsterdam High School was placed in a hold in place.
Numerous law enforcement units responded, including the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the Amsterdam Police Department and the New York State Police.
Through investigative techniques, a phone number associated with the call was identified. With the assistance of the New York State Intelligence Center and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the incident was determined to be a swatting call. Authorities confirmed there is no credible threat to the district. No injuries were reported.
Although the threat has been determined to be unfounded, safety protocols remained in place as a precaution. Law enforcement personnel maintained an increased presence at district buildings throughout the remainder of the school day and assisted with normal dismissal procedures to ensure the continued safety of students and staff.
The district appreciates the swift response and coordination of its local, state and federal law enforcement partners, as well as the cooperation of students and staff during the incident.
“The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority,” said High School Principal Molly Schaefer. “We will continue to follow established safety protocols whenever concerns arise.”
Additional updates will be shared if more information becomes available.
