AHS Black Leadership Summit

Amsterdam High School welcomed a group of accomplished community leaders last month as part of its Black Leadership Summit, held in recognition of Black History Month.

The event brought together professionals from a variety of fields to share their experiences, career journeys and messages of perseverance with students. Speakers highlighted the importance of leadership, education and community engagement while encouraging students to pursue their goals and give back to their communities.

Featured speakers included Rashane Redman, a manager of ACOG and Amsterdam High School graduate; John Sumpter, director of outreach for Creative Connections Clubhouse; Amin Glass, an MTS engineer at GlobalFoundries; Charles Beekman, an All-American athlete, coach and mentor who was recently inducted into the Greater Amsterdam School District Hall of Fame; the Rev. Kent McHeard, president of the GASD Board of Education; Tyrone O’Meally, assistant superintendent for the Schenectady City School District; and Allie B., owner and executive chef of Allie B’s Cozy Kitchen.

Throughout the summit, speakers shared personal stories about overcoming challenges, building successful careers and using their experiences to support others. Their messages emphasized resilience, leadership and the importance of community connections.

The summit provided students with the opportunity to hear directly from professionals who have made an impact in their respective fields while celebrating the contributions and leadership of Black professionals in the region.

Amsterdam High School officials said events like the Black Leadership Summit help students see the many pathways to success while reinforcing the importance of representation, mentorship and community leadership.
