Peace Corps presentation

Earlier this month, students in Ms. Anna Collie’s and Mr. Eric Nielsen’s Spanish classes gained a global perspective during a visit from Peace Corps volunteer Anthony Swingruber, who shared insights from his service in Paraguay.

Swingruber spoke about living and working in rural communities, outlining both the challenges and rewards of volunteering abroad. He discussed the importance of cultural exchange, relationship-building and adapting to new environments. His presentation provided students with an overview of daily life, local customs and the role Peace Corps volunteers play in supporting education and community development.

The visit included interactive cultural experiences. Swingruber introduced students to mate, a traditional Paraguayan herbal drink, and explained how sharing the beverage is a social ritual that promotes connection and hospitality. Students also viewed examples of ñandutí, an indigenous needlepoint lace known for its detailed craftsmanship and cultural significance.

To further highlight Paraguay’s culture, Swingruber shared soccer jerseys from local teams and discussed the importance of fútbol in the country’s national identity.

Spanish teachers said the visit helped connect classroom learning with real-world experiences. By hearing personal stories and engaging with authentic cultural items, students developed a broader understanding of Paraguay and the impact of international service.
