The Greater Amsterdam School District shared updates on a proposed capital project and property plans during its March 18 Board of Education meeting.
As part of the proposal, the district is exploring the development and sale of land near Marie Curie Elementary. The Curie property includes plans for residential development, with conceptual site layouts outlining housing, infrastructure and access points. District officials noted the project could generate approximately $1 million in additional annual tax revenue if approved and fully developed.
District officials also provided an update on the Truax Road property, including a lease update and a plan to sell the site to Head Start.
In addition, the district is considering a capital project that includes the installation of a multi-use turf field. The project would utilize approximately $5 million from the district’s capital reserve and be supported by an estimated 95% building aid reimbursement from New York State.
District officials said the turf field would support physical education classes, provide expanded opportunities for student-athletes and allow for increased community use of district facilities. The project would also include the addition of a dedicated softball field, providing improved and equitable facilities for the district’s softball program.
A special Board of Education meeting was anticipated in late March to take action on the proposed turf project.
District officials noted that these proposals are part of a broader effort to maximize resources, improve facilities and plan for long-term needs while minimizing local financial impact. Additional information on the capital project and related proposals will continue to be shared with the community ahead of the May vote.
